As you know I relocated my studio to Singapore last September. Since then I have been working on a new body of work to be unveiled later this year, as well as having a fantastic adventure exploring the new culture and art scene. However, I just couldn’t resist getting involved in a few innovative group shows and projects. These have also been a really wonderful way of learning about – and finding my place alongside – other artists in Singapore.
The first of the shows opens later this month at The Substation, a cornerstone of Singapore’s art scene having been the very first independent contemporary arts centre to open in 1990. Over the years, The Substation has worked with some of Singapore’s most critically acclaimed artists, writers and intellectuals. This month, they have invited me to participate in minimART, their platform dedicated to young contemporary artists.
MinimART invites artists to push the boundary of art within an open space in the gallery, as an opportunity to define perceptions or notions of art.
For this challenge, I decided to activate my Word Collection in Singapore. It’s all about collecting the words & stories which form the basis of my work. These words are collected from my audiences, through the ongoing Word Collection Project. It aims to gather stories & secrets from online & offline audiences, giving people the chance to make themselves the subject, and capturing the voice of that audience.
Existing primarily as an evolving text artwork, the Word Collection can be read and added to online, or as a sculptural interactive performance at exhibitions. It has been performed in London, has travelled to LA, and now it’s here in Singapore, where performer and artist Yen Phang will become part of the living word collection sculpture, enticing you to write on his surfaces. Can you help capture the voice of Singapore?
Contributions are often beautiful, moving, dark, funny, intriguing, rude, touching, & varied. (See a gallery of a word collection project event at an exhibition in Notting Hill here).
Join me and add your contribution at Substation on the 23rd or 24th March.
