TRANSPARENT BORDERS

Join us at THE DISPLACED this Friday in Singapore, where performer Syv Bruzeau and myself have collaborated on a performance artwork where 6000 saga seeds and one human body interact with a space filled with words, light, and mandalas. Both the performer’s body and the seeds eventually transcend their own borders, and are carried away by the audience….

Transparent Borders takes place at 8.00 – 8.30pm during art festival: THE DISPLACED at The Arts House, 26th July 2013

Mandala, Nicola Anthony

What are the borders to our world?

The familiar circle of our lives keeps us safe and helps shape who we are, but its edges can be transcended. Once we go beyond these ephemeral borders, we step into the unknown, the scary, the beautiful. Sometimes only when we step away from our pasts and the boundaries of our self-formed characters or society-formed identities, can we open our eyes.

In this performance artwork, 6000 saga seeds and one human body interact with a space filled with words, light, and mandalas. Both the performer’s body and the seeds eventually transcend their own borders, and are carried away by the audience.

The visitors are asked to take a saga seed for themselves, and through experiencing the performance, invited to explore individuality, their own peripheries, and the world outside them.

The saga seed in Southeast Asia speaks of love and connections, as well as a nostalgia for childhood and days gone by. Nicola Anthony says “To me, the seeds themselves are ‘individuals’ – something in the way they look nearly identical but have their own movement and character. They represent people, ideas, pasts, memories, moments. I have hand numbered and documented 6000 red ovules for this piece, so they can begin their unique journey. Every seed has been documented in the online seed-log, revealing its origins and journey.”

Positioning herself within the circle of seeds, Syv Bruzeau says, “A mandala represents both a specific image with definite borders and a mystery without given explanation. It is a never ending quest, of feeling an edge and going beyond. It is usually made of millions of dots, like the saga seeds, and each one is different yet makes a picture. Impermanent like my dance, like a movement.”
