Hidden Island, Nicola Anthony, 2015, Atlas Series, 21x21cm
Hidden Island is designed to feature the viewer in it’s mirrored porthole. The reflection is surrounded by layers of incense burned paper, the joss stick drawing process taking away parts of the whole to reveal the image. Made with understanding and acceptance of the self in mind: Looking after our own hearts can come so low down in the list of priorities in day to day life that we forget that it is important to take care of ourselves, and that helps us to also better take care of others.
The title references the undiscovered or unrevealed parts of our selves and our worlds, and of course the poem by John Donne:
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
